A&E department is an absolutely awful place

May 13, 2024
I have attended the accident and emergency department at Heartlands Hospital on three separate occasions due to a hiatic hernia. They have all been the most awful experiences. I had to wait hours and hours whilst experiencing the most horrid vomiting and diarrhea. I don't think there could have been any worse place on this earth to be while in pain and having such symptoms. No one cared, no one helped it really was awful. After finally being seen I have discovered that there is absolutely no pathway of care or any referrals. A very disappointing service.

Lack of communication

May 13, 2024
My husband was admitted to the hospital. While care was good, the lack of communication hindered our experience. I am my husband carer, but was kicked out of visiting for protected meal times, but there was then no one to help him eat. Following his time spent recovering on a ward, I was told that he needed follow up appointments. I have had to chase up these appointments and nothing is simple or made clear. There is poor communication between the departments. The whole experience has been exhaustingly frustrating.

Poor facilities for people with hearing loss

May 13, 2024
The facilities at the hospital are appalling for people with hearing loss. The staff do not seem to have any training, making communication very difficult. Even registering at the reception desks there are no loops systems. More needs to be done at the hospital to ensure that peoples needs are met and that staff can communicate with all people effectively.

Speedy response to serious illness

May 13, 2024
The accident and emergency department at Heartlands Hospital were excellent. From arrival in the department my seriously ill parent was in an operating theatre within the hour. The staff were wonderful and took excellent care of them quickly identifying the problem and ultimately saving their life. They kept me well informed and I am so grateful for the service we received that day.

Seen quicker than expected

May 1, 2024
I attended A&E after 2 weeks of feeling unwell following a bang to the head. Upon arrival the signs said that there was an 8 hour wait but I was seen and sent home after only a few hours. When I was called I was sent to ward 9 and examined quickly. I was told to come back if I was still experiencing symptoms in 2 weeks.

Excellent care but difficult to get to

May 1, 2024
I was told there was a 2 week wait for a gynae appointment but was seen within a week. I received excellent care and the hospital was a lovely environment. My only issue is that it can be difficult to get to Heartlands Hospital on public transport.

Can be easy to get lost

April 29, 2024
I visited this hospital for a cardiology appointment. The staff were very good but there was quite a wait to be seen which wasn't great. It can also be quite easy to get lost as some of the departments are difficult to find.
