Lack of communication between staff

My mom spent a number of hours in majors in A&E at Heartlands Hospital, while waiting for emergency surgery. We waited over 5 hours to get into a proper bay, and then care was poor. An agency nurse was in charge of her care, notices on the wall stated that if you are in pain speak to the nurse, but she kept saying that she could not do anything until the doctor came back round. In the end we chased this up with another nurse who got a doctor to come straight away. This nurse tried to move my mom, who had a broken hip, and just kept pulling sheets. It did not work and caused pain to the injury and further chaffing of the skin. She then went and got a colleague to assist her with a slip sheet. This did not work the colleague ended up pulling mom really badly from her injured side, causing her to scream in pain. He asked what she had done to her leg and I told him she had a broken hip right by where he pulled her. He could not apologise enough and had not been told that she had a broken hip. Communication needs to improve between staff.

Good experience during labour

The care I received here during labour and delivery of my child was very good. The aftercare was also great and the midwives were lovely despite being very busy. My experience of the maternity department here has been positive overall.

Felt like a private service

I visited this hospital to get medicine for my very young son. As soon as I walked in the staff were lovely and it felt like I was at a private service.

Lovely but poor communication

The staff in maternity are lovely but they don't seem to communicate effectively as I had a number of issues relating to staff communicating with each other while I was there.

Excellent staff in DAU

I have been attending the DAU weekly for scans and the staff have been very helpful. I see the same people every time which is helpful as they get to know me. They are excellent when it comes to communication and I am able to book my appointments for specific times.

Very good care from antenatal clinic

I regularly attend appointments at the antenatal clinic and the care has been very good. I am regularly called in for appointments and the wait time when I get there is quite short. The doctors and nurses here are very good and have taken good care of me throughout.
