Poor support for mothers

March 31, 2023
It would be nice to have a non medical trained person at the maternity ward who can support caesarean section mothers. It can be very lonely and especially when birth partners are not allowed to stay overnight.

Left with catheter for much longer than advised

March 31, 2023
I was left with catheters for 17 hours when it was only supposed to be 6-8 hours. Very difficult situation for me to go through as a new mother.

Awful experience and rude staff

March 31, 2023
I received a letter for an ultrasound scan at Heartlands UHB. When I attended I was asked when I had last eaten and I told them that morning. A very stroppy and rude member of staff told me that I the letter had instructions not to eat and that I the ultrasound could not go ahead. I explained that there had been no instructions with the letter just details of the appointment time and date, and instructions on how to get to the hospital. This member of staff called me a liar and treated me appallingly. I was told that the appointment would be rescheduled but I had to chase this up and approach my GP to refer me again.

Seen quickly and admitted for observation

March 31, 2023
I attended the A&E department experiencing breathing difficulties. I was quickly seen and admitted to an observation ward. I was later discharged but was very happy with the speed of being seen, observed and treated. Staff were friendly and caring and treated me well.

Good care in A&E awful wait for pharmacy

March 28, 2023
I was taken in to the accident and emergency department. I was treated quickly and isolated with suspected covid 19 and/or the flu. I was diagnosed with both treated and told that I could go home. I was then held up for over three and a half hours waiting for the pharmacy to get my medication ready. This infuriated me. Not only was I waiting unnecessarily while being very unwell but the hold up prevented someone else from accessing treatment. This issue needs to be addressed.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments regarding your patient experience at Heartlands Hospital A&E department. We are sorry that you had a bit of a wait for our pharmacy services. We are continuing to have a great deal of pressure on our resources which is having a major impact on our waiting times.

Nevertheless, It is lovely to receive such positive feedback from our patients about our staff and service.

Poorly run, wasting time and NHS money

March 26, 2023
My daughter was admitted to the paediatric ward with suspected appendicitis. We ended up being there for nearly 5 days - most of which was waiting to be seen by doctors who then failed to make adequate decisions about her care. In the end she had a healthy appendix removed when in actual fact a simple scan would have revealed an ovarian cyst. We had to arrange a private scan after her discharge from unnecessary surgery and recovery form the ensuing sepsis to get a diagnosis for her pain. Apparently the scan was too expensive and the referral would have been rejected. Instead she had a general anaesthetic and all the associated expenses of surgery. A few days after discharge she got sepsis which was put down to the absence of antibiotic cover following the bowel surgery. I will avoid going to heartlands at all costs in future. One of the nurses on the children’s ward actually said she wouldn’t take her own child there if they were unwell.
